Amsterdam, Johannes Crellius, 1708. 3 volumes large folio, antique hardback, untrimmedיs. ֹ first edition of this sumptuous work on the architectural remains of ancient Rome, "estimי for the accuracy of the drawings" (Brunet), to which Bonaventura van Overbeek devoted twenty years of his life. It was not published until after his death by his cousin Michiel van Overbeke. This first טre י edition in Latin was followed by a translation into French in 1709 and into Italian in 1739. The illustration consists of 146 beautiful views of Rome drawnי and engravedי on copper by the author, including a א double page for the Colisיe, to which are added an allיgoric frontispiece, a plate opposite the dיdicace א Queen Anne of England and ֹcosse and a double-page א plan of Rome, all three engraved by Matthys Pool, as well as a fine portrait of the author interpretיtי by Cornelis Vermeulen after Jacob Christoph Le Blon and 33 figures in the text of numismatics. The Dutch painter and engraver Bonaventura van Overbeek (1660-1705), יlטve of Gיrard de Lairesse, gathered here all the drawings he rיalis during his three trips to א Rome and for which he claims the prיcision of the measurements in his prיface, reproaching א his prיdיcessors for having guטre respectי the rיalitי. Working copy enriched with quantitי of highly intיressant handwritten annotations in franחais (architecture, history, bibliography, etc.) inscribed in the 19th siטcle in the margins of the text, and two postיior plans of Rome. Sparse foxing and spotting, plan of Rome and double plate of the Colisיe browned, small marginal lack without engraitי at the bottom of the first leaves and engravings of volume I, fine marginal mouillure א at the end of volume III, cartonnages usagיs, spines missing, a few leaves dיreliיs.
