Lot no. 49
OVIDE. Metamorphoseôn libri quindecim. Venice, Aldus, October 1502. 3 parts in one volume in-8, stiff vellum, smooth spine decorated with a gilt title cartouche (18th century Italian binding). First Aldine edition of Ovid's works - one of the most valuable Aldine editions, according to Renouard. First volume only, containing the Metamorphoses. Two other volumes published in December 1502 and February 1503 complete this edition, but it is extremely rare to find all three volumes together. A very fine impression in aldine italics with the anchor mark on the title and last leaf. The copy includes the redundant line "Lib. I" at the beginning of the Metamorphoses (f. a2), a sign of the first printing. Numerous 16th-century handwritten annotations in the margins of the text, including a few manicules and initial letters, as well as a sketch of a ship on the last leaf. From the library of Domenico Cotugno (1736-1822), famous Neapolitan anatomist, with bookplate. Small loss in the margin of ff. a2 and b1 (affecting an annotation), worm's gallery in the margin of quire k and another, filled in, in the corner of quires x-z, scattered foxing and small wetnesses, cords worn. Renouard, 37:12 - Aldo Manuzio tipografo, n°68.
