A splendid edition, one of the masterpieces of French Rococo book production, illustrated by the leading artists of the Ancien Régime. Produced by the publisher Basan and the engraver Le Mire, this edition presents the Latin text alongside the French translation of Abbé Banier, and is adorned with engravings after Boucher, Eisen, Gravelot, Leprince, Monnet, Moreau, Parizeau, and Saint Gois, engraved by Binet, Lemire, Baquoy, Née, and Saint-Aubin, while the vignettes and headpieces were designed by Choffard and Monnet.
4 volumes, 4to (258 x 195mm). Engraved title, 2 engraved dedication plates, and 140 plates numbered 2-140 plus one final unnumbered plate (complete as per index), 30 engraved vignettes, engraved initials and headpieces (some occasional spotting, otherwise a fine copy). Bound in contemporary mottled calf, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers (slight wear to the spines). Provenance: 'Chateau de Nointel.' (4)
