Lot no. 845
A pair of rare mythological Meissen figurine groups. "Cupid with arrow and doves" and "Psyche with Cerberus" Counterparts. On a square, naturalistically painted plinth, Cupid standing in a contrapposto, lightly clad in a rose-coloured cloth, reaching for the shouldered quiver with his right hand. His left hand holds a bow. To the side, a pair of turtledoves sitting on a tree stump covered with sculpted roses. As a counterpart, the winged Psyche looking downwards as a half nude in a striding pose, dressed in a light blue cloth with a gold lace border. She holds an urn in her left hand and a delicacy in her right to appease the multi-headed hellhound Cerberus sitting at her feet. Fine polychrome, pastel-coloured painting with gold accents. Designed by Hermann Hultzsch, 1882, model no. M 176 and M 180, unmarked; crossed swords mark. H. 36 cm - 37 cm. Characteristic, graceful figures with softly modelled faces and fine incarnations. Between 1897 and 1899 the Meissen manufactory acquired several models from the Dresden sculptor, including comparable figures of Cupid and Psyche. Cf. cat. Kgl. Sächs. Porzellan Manufactur in Meissen, sheet 15, Jedding, p. 150. A pair of rare porcelain figures of "Cupid with arrow and turtledoves" and "Psyche and Cerberus" modelled by Hermann Hultzsch. Counterparts. Insignificantly restored. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Circa 1900.
