Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973) Dove White terracotta painted with black slip, dedicated, signed and dated on the right wing: "for L. Casanova, Picasso, 9.2.53". Unique piece. Height: 14 cm; 22 x 9.5 cm Expert: Cabinet PERAZZONE-BRUN, Paris The Picasso Committee has confirmed the authenticity of this work and a notice from the Picasso Committee recorded in the archives under reference 0307 will be given to the buyer, Succession Picasso 2025 "For Picasso, the challenge was of a different nature: he tried to give life to these pieces by subjecting them to the most surprising transformations. The white earthenware painted with engobe was not covered with a glaze, resulting in a matt surface whose spontaneity breathed new life into the form. Madoura also produced a variety of jugs, bottles and ordinary vases, which allowed Picasso to explore the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional representation by decorating them. The artist often refers to the plants, animals or human features suggested by the forms themselves: jugs and bottles thus metamorphose into animals or human heads, while pots and vases become still lifes or landscapes. But the three-dimensional nature of ceramics, whether Ramié's forms or his own sculptural creations, represented a new challenge for Picasso". (Marilyn McCully, Céramiques de Picasso, volume I œuvres originales, Editions Images Modernes, 1999, p. 24-25) "Many of the most striking transformations that Picasso applied to terracotta objects resulted in bird forms. When he began working at Madoura, he twisted and shaped freshly turned bottles or blocks of clay to create pigeons or doves. Some are simply engraved to give the effect of feathers or eyes, while on others, including a series of white doves, the plumage is painted with engobe, using broad brushstrokes. "(Marilyn McCully, Céramiques de Picasso, volume I œuvres originales, Editions Images Modernes, 1999, p. 499) "The appearance of these birds in Picasso's paintings after the Second World War is linked to the posters he made for the Communist Party, where the white dove, a symbol of peace, appears either alone or associated with a female face. "(Marilyn McCully, Céramiques de Picasso, volume I œuvres originales, Editions Images Modernes, 1999, p. 465)
