Pablo PICASSO 1881-1973
NU ASSIS SUR UN COUSSIN, 1971
Picasso's erotic oeuvre has two main characteristics. First of all, it is always in a spirit of good humor - for Picasso, sex is never sad, even in his latest work - and secondly, sex is never a minor affair for this painter. Picasso always believed that art could say anything and should never be limited by puritanical considerations. For Picasso, there were two periods that were particularly rich in erotic drawings if we exclude the theme of the embrace that is present throughout: at the beginning of his career, and at the end of his life
This superb drawing, dated February 1971, is thus part of the second and last one of his life. The loss of his virility - Picasso had just entered his eightieth year - engendered a prodigious pictorial fertility on the erotic theme, especially during the spring of 1971. During this period, Picasso began to work on a series of engravings inspired by monotypes by Degas, known as the Maison Tellier series, representing scenes from a brothel. Nu assis sur un coussin, although not formally part of the series, is also related to the theme of brothel life.
Sitting on a couch, the model, to whom Picasso has given a detached air, crosses her legs in a way that both shows and offers her genitals. In reality, the young woman is awaiting her customer. The virtuoso drawing, with its sure, unhesitating line that includes a note of Picasso humor, also conveys the pleasure experienced by the artist as he drew.
