Pablo Ruiz Picasso (Málaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973)   “ Carnet catalan o de Gósol ”   Facsimile. Copy 235 of 500. Published by Berggruen & CIE/Daniel Jacomet. Paris, 1958.   Dimensions: Case: 12,8 x 18 x 2,2 cm. Álbum: 12,1 x 7,9 x 1 cm   We present a facsimile of the Catalan identity card that Pablo Picasso made during his stay in Gósol, in northern Catalonia, in the summer of 1906. The Picasso Museum preserves this card in its collection (MPB 113.039c). According to the museum, “in Gósol, Picasso filled an entire notebook with various notes and drawings, now known as the ‘Catalan Notebook’. Like a logbook, many of its pages focus on the figure of Fernande Olivier, model and exceptional witness to the new aesthetic journey.” Indeed, both his partner Fernande Olivier and the village of Gósol were direct witnesses to the beginning of an artistic journey that would transform Picasso's brush and, with it, 20th-century modern art. The Centre Picasso Gósol—a reflection of the artist's mark on the village—explains on its website that a doctor friend recommended the village to him. its permanent exhibition “Picasso, Gósol 1906” shows how, “through his sketchbooks, the strong influence of the landscape on Picasso's paintings unfolds, which begin to demonstrate the shift from figurative painting to a realistic but more abstract representation of his surroundings.” There he produced more than 300 pieces, each of which, individually and collectively, are an extremely valuable document for analyzing the painter's evolution. A significant number of these pieces were featured in the exhibition “Picasso 1906. The Great Transformation,” held at the Reina Sofía Museum to mark the 50th anniversary of the artist's death, from November 15, 2023, to March 4, 2024.   Finally, it is worth mentioning the non-fiction novel Pau de Gósol. Picasso al Pirineu (2023), in which Iñaki Rubio recounts the painter's stay in the village and his relationships with the ‘gosolans’.   Referenced bibliography: - Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
