PACKE (Charles). The spirit of travel. London, Chapmann & Hall, 1857. In-8°, publisher's full red cloth binding, cold decoration on boards, gilt title on spine. Rare first edition. An account of a trip to the Alps by the man who later became a convinced Pyrenean. He did the classic Furka tour on foot, the Gemmi, Grindelwald where he climbed the Petite Scheidegg and the Faulhorn... Armorial bookplate of John Yarker pasted on the flyleaf. A fine copy.
Charles Packe (1826-1896), an Irish scholar and mountaineer, made several ascents in the Pyrenees, including the second ascent of Pic Posets in 1861 and, above all, the first ascent of the difficult south-west ridge of Balaïtous in 1864. He wrote a guide to the Pyrenees in 1862 and a remarkable 1:80,000 map of the Monts Maudits, published in 1866.
