PAIR OF GREEK HIGH KARAT GOLD AND ENAMEL LION-HEAD APPLIQUÉS. Ca. 500 - 300 BCA fine pair of gold appliqués, each formed as a circular disc with a lion’s mask in high relief. The face shows furrowed brows above almond-shaped eyes, a broad muzzle with flared nostrils and incised whisker lines, and a slightly open mouth. Short stylised mane frames the cheeks and forehead. The mask is encircled by a narrow beaded border and an outer zone of scrolling filigree with coloured enamel in the interstices, finished with a beaded outer edge. The reverse is fitted with a pair of suspension loops.Size: 19-19mm x 19-19mm; Weight: 3g.Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was documented and authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery.
