PAIR OF ROMAN TERRACOTTA OIL LAMPS WITH CUPID AND DYING GLADIATOR Ca. AD 1 - 300. A pair of mould made terracotta oil lamps, including, from the left, Loeschcke VIII type lamp with a pierced ring handle, heart-shaped nozzle, and double circular grooves framing the discus, which shows a figure of winged Cupid in motion. The one on the right is a Loeschcke IV type with volute-spreading nozzle and a rounded body, the sunken discus decorated with a defeated gladiator depicted in a kneeling pose, surrounded by a plain double groove.
