Lot no. 389
PAIR OF TANG DYNASTY TERRACOTTA STATUETTES OF WOMEN PLAYING INSTRUMENTS Ca. AD 619 - 907. A pair of finely sculpted terracotta ladies playing musical instruments, both depicted seated on the ground. Their faces are sensitively moulded with full cheeks, a small, dimpled chin, delicately carved mouth and nose, and elongated eyes. Their lips are painted in bright red and the cheeks with a light rouge-coloured pigment, rendering an attractive representation of rosy skin. They are both portrayed wearing a long robe with a low-cut neckline and a high waistband tied in a bow just below the breast. Size: 235-250mm x 130-140mm; Weight: 2.63kg. Provenance: UK private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
