The mermaid holds at arm's length a twisted stem wrapped in a garland of pampers from which springs a bouquet of three fires in a console with foliage scrolls, surmounted by a pine cone. The oval terrace is decorated with pearled reserves on a blued steel base, with a Wedgwood medallion in the centre. It stands on eight small feet. Maison Beurdeley was one of the most important dynasties of 19th-century furniture and objets d'art dealers and manufacturers. It supplied the Imperial Furniture Guard of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, as well as the great courts of Europe, and took part in the Universal Exhibitions in Paris, winning numerous awards, including the gold medal in 1878.
