They stand on a rocky mound and a circular ormolu base. Quadrangular white marble pedestals support the ensemble.
Louis XVI period
Height 43.5 cmThese candelabras, produced in a variety of editions, were a great success in the 18th century, and several pairs can now be found in major public and private collections. These include one from the former Riahi collection, which was sold in November 2000, and another pair from the collection of Leopold I, King of the Belgians, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (probably the work of master gilder Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813)).
This model is also close to the work of sculptors Louis-Félix de La Rue and Clodion. The objets d'art department of the Musée du Louvre holds a pair of candelabras of a similar design, showing a naked girl sitting on a rock and a child satyr leaning against a stump. Two candelabra identical to these were described in detail in the catalogue of the Aubert sale held in Paris on 2 March 1786.
