A pair of English floor globes, the terrestrial globe by John and George Cary, the celestial globe by George Frederick Crutchley, mid-19th century Successors to their father, John Cary (1755-1835), the brothers George (c.1788-1859) and John II (1791-1852), continued to make maps and globes until the mid-19th century when, between 1846 and 1850, these engraved plates were acquired by G. F. Crutchley. George Frederick Crutchley (1796/7-1880) appears to have trained in the workshop of the famous cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith. He set up his own firm in 1823, specialising in publishing maps of London. From the 1830s onwards, he expanded his publishing business and, between 1846 and 1850, acquired the map plates from Cary. Like the atlases he began publishing in the 1840s, Crutchley's globes are relatively rare and reflect his desire to expand his firm's output into a growing market based on the globes of J. & W. Cary globes. Crutchley used these globes until the 1870s.
