PAIR OF PARQUET GLOBES, EARLY 19th CENTURY ENGLISH WORK Wood, steel and papier-mâché : - The globe signed 'Newton's new and improved Terrestrial Globe delineated from the Observations of the most esteemed Navigators and Travellers to the present Time. Manufactured by Newton Son & Berry, 66 Chancery Lane' in a cartouche and 'London Published Feb[ruar]y 2d 1838', bears an analemma marked 'An improved Analemma shewing the Sun's Declination and place in the Zodiac for every Day of the Year by Inspection'. - The celestial globe signed 'Newton's new and improved Celestial Globe on which [paper missing] Stars ared taken from the elaborate and much approved Catalogue of Piazzi, the nebulas from Bode and the double stars and those with proper motion from South. The Right Ascensions and Declinations of the whole having been calculated and accurately laid down for the year 1840 by Mr W. Newton. Manufactured by Newton Son & Berry Chancery Lane.' in a cartouche and 'London Published Feb[ruar]y 2d 1838'. On polished wooden stand with tripod joined by a turned column and bearing the paper-covered horizon ring, printed with scales for days and months, ecliptic, wind areas, azimuth, and amplitude Horizons signed 'Published 1 March 1838 by Newton S & Berry, 66, Chancery Lane London'. Each globe fitted with a brass meridian graduated in quadrants divided to 1°; hour ring at the pole divided I - XII -I twice (indexes missing) Damage, missing parts and restorations Height: 100 cm (39 ½ in.) D. (globes): 38 cm (15 in.) A pair of English floor globes, early 19th century Founded by John Newton (1759-1844), the 'Newton House' lasted until the early decades of the twentieth century. Between 1831 and 184, he went into partnership with the engineer Miles Berry. The W. Newton who calculated the positions of the stars was William Newton, John's second son, and the author of a manual to accompany their globes Familiar Introduction to astronomy ... and the use of globes, London, 1832.
