A pair of Louis XVI parcel-gilt and cream lacquered miroirs d'entre-fenetre, Strasbourg, attributed to the Kaeshammer's family workshop
Thanks to the quality of their finely carved decoration, this pair of mirrors can be attributed to the workshop of the Kaeshammer family, a famous dynasty of cabinet-makers active in Strasbourg throughout the 18th century.
Dating from the 1780s, they can be traced back to François-de-Paule Joseph Kaeshammer (1747-1829), who was awarded a master's degree in Strasbourg in 1771, after training in Paris.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg holds his masterpiece, a chest in the shape of a sarcophagus, whose highly sculpted decoration, already inspired by neoclassical fashion, was praised by the jury, who awarded him a commendation. Nos miroirs, with its decoration of piastres and floral urns, is characteristic of this artist, who initiated this new fashion in Strasbourg production. His reputation was such that he developed a clientele well beyond the city, working for the Baron de Dietrich, the Bretzenhein palace near Mannheim and also for the Rohan palace, which became the imperial residence in 1805.
Unlike their Parisian counterparts, Strasbourg's joiners and cabinet-makers did not adopt the stamp, following Germanic custom.
Their work can be traced back to oral tradition or to inscriptions on furniture frames. A suite of three consoles and two mirrors attributed to Joseph Kaeshammer from the former Hubert Guerrand-Hermès collection sold at Sotheby's Paris on December 2023, lot 311.
