Lot no. 10
Pair of mahogany console tables, The griotte marble top with inverted moulding rests on a belt with laurel leaf wreaths and a ribbon and mascaron in a lozenge frame with palmettes, supported by sheathed uprights with busts of antique women in caryatids and a rectangular plinth topped at the back with a mirror back; (minor restorations). Stamped by Bernard Molitor, cabinetmaker received master in 1787. Consulate period. H: 91 cm, W: 97 cm, D: 46 cm Bibliography : U. Leben, Molitor, ébéniste de Louis XVI à Louis XVIII, Paris, 1992, p. 99 and n°88, p. 194. Exhibition: Bernard Molitor (1755-1833), cat. exp., Luxembourg, 1995, n°37, p. 96 and p. 221. Ulrich Leben, author of the reference work and curator of the exhibition on Bernard Molitor, situates these two console tables chronologically during the Consulate period (1799-1804), thus attesting to the very precursory nature of the cabinetmaker, whose style heralded the Empire period.
