H.39.5 cm (15 ½ in.) Pierre-Joseph Rosset the elder was active at the Manufacture de Sèvres from 1753 to 1799. Edmé-François Bouillat worked at the Manufacture de Sèvres from 1758 to 1810. Provenance : Sale Paris, Galerie Charpentier, Sale in Paris, Galerie Charpentier, Me Ader, 17 June 1958, lot 19 (The sale catalogue states: "according to a family tradition, these vases were given to the great-great-uncle of the present owner by Philippe Egalité"). A pair of Sevres hard-paste porcelain vases and their covers, 18th century, circa 1776, the landscape paintings attributed to Pierre-Joseph Rosset the elder, the flower paintings attributed to Edmé-François Bouillat The shape of these vases is a variation on the Boizot goat's head vase; the lion's head handles replace the goat's heads. The lion's head emerging from a medallion and framed by two paws is that used on the so-called lion-head vase created in 1765, a pair of which with a new blue ground are in the Wallace Collection in London (cf. R. Savill, The Wallace Collection, catalogue of Sevres porcelain, London, 1988, vol. I, no. C282-3, pp. 277-281). A drawing of the Boizot vase with goat's heads is kept in the archives of the Manufacture de Sèvres (inventory no. 2011.3.416) and was included in the exhibition Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1809), Sculpteur du roi et directeur de l'atelier de sculpture à la Manufacture de Sèvres, Paris, Versailles in 2001. The model of the Boizot vase with a goat's head seems to have appeared in 1776 (cf. ibid p. 464). The plaster model of the Boizot goat's head vase is also kept in the archives of the Manufacture de Sèvres and reproduced by A. Troude, Choix de modèles de la Manufacture de Sèvres, s. d., p. 119. The painters' and kiln-workers' registers kept in the Sèvres archives do not mention any lion-headed vases, but in 1777, vases with a landscape goat's head are mentioned under the name of Pierre-Joseph Rosset, along with a Cornet vase with the same decoration. These same vases appeared the same year under the name of the painter Bouillat, responsible for the bouquets of flowers on the reverse. The Musée de Sèvres holds a Cornet vase decorated by Rosset and Bouillat in 1785. Vincent Bastien has shown how this vase was bought by King Louis XVI for 1,200 livres on 17 November 1785, perhaps to replace the 1777 example that had been damaged, suggesting that the set of three vases made in 1777 was a royal purchase (see V. Bastien, "L'évolution insolite du 'vase Cornet' à Sèvres au 18e siècle", Sèvres, Revue des amis du musée national de céramique, 2019, n° 28, pp. 56-57). A pair of goat-headed vases is mentioned in the inventory drawn up at Versailles in 1791 in the former room of the King's gold crockery and described as follows: "2 Vases of Sèvres Porcelain with white and gold backgrounds with medallions of flowers and landscapes, the handles formed by the heads of Rams with their lids 16 inches high and 9 inches in diameter" at 720 livres each. Among the goat's head vases known today are a pair with a white and gold base, decorated with children and trophies, sold at Sotheby's in New York on 19 October 2017, lot 232, and a pair with a blue base and decorated with Etruscan figures in gold, decorated with ormolu handles in the shape of rams, kept at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and reproduced by Marie-Laure de Rochebrune in the exhibition catalogue Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1809), Sculpteur du roi et directeur de l'atelier de sculpture à la Manufacture de Sèvres, Paris, Versailles, 2001, p. 263, fig. 6.
