Pair of geese - China, Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) Polychrome terracotta A rare and elegant pair of naturalistic geese in modelled terracotta, decorated with red, yellow and turquoise pigments. The expressive poses, taut necks and slightly raised heads reflect the keen sense of observation of nature typical of Han craftsmen. These zoomorphic figures accompanied the deceased to their tombs, symbolising prosperity and the continuity of life in the afterlife. Remains of original polychromy and beautiful burial patina. Height: 21 cm - Length: 20 cm Provenance: former private collection Tested for age by thermoluminescence (QED Marseille): consistent with the Han period
