PALISSY (Bernard). OEUVRES, revues sur les exemplaires de la Bibliothèque du Roi, avec des notes par MM. Faujas de Saint-Fond, et Gobet. Paris, Ruault, 1777. In-4° of 76-[734] pages, porphyry calf, gilt fillet on covers, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (period binding). First collective edition of the discoveries of Bernard Palissy (1510-1589), "a simple earthenware potter", on the structures of the earth, alchemy, metals, stones, etc. It was donated by Faujas de Saint-Fond and the mineralogist Gobet 150 years after the death of the author, who has since fallen into oblivion. Without the portrait and the dedicatory epistle to Benjamin Franklin which were removed before publication (cf. Brunet) and which are almost always absent (preliminary leaves v to viii). Binding rubbed, some foxing. (Caillet, 8265) (Brunet IV, 320).
