Commissioned by Catherine II to lead an expedition to study Russia's natural resources, Pallas travelled for six years, from St Petersburg to the borders of China, via the shores of the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains, and brought back a valuable collection of observations and specimens in the fields of geology, botany, zoology and ethnography.
