Paris, Maradan, an II; 8 vol. in-8 (187 x 124 mm) and one atlas in-folio (325 x 247 mm), marbled green calf, spines decorated with gilt rosettes, fillets on covers (Period bindings). 108 plates (fauna, natural history, costumes...) numbered from 1 to 108 including the General Map of the Russian Empire. Second edition enlarged with comments by Lamarck on natural history and by Langlès and Billecocq on industry, trade, the customs of the Tartars and their relations with the "savages of North America". Commissioned by Catherine II to lead an expedition to study Russia's natural resources, Pallas travelled for six years, from St Petersburg to the borders of China, via the shores of the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains, and brought back a valuable collection of observations and specimens in the fields of geology, botany, zoology and ethnography. A VERY FINE COPY IN ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY BINDINGS. The atlas is uniformly bound (headbands a little worn, spotting and eating at two corners).
