First French edition of this important account of the journey to Siberia made on the orders of Catherine II by the German zoologist and botanist Peter Simon Pallas. His journey, from St Petersburg to the borders of China via the Caspian Sea, the area around Lake Baikal and the Ural Mountains, took six years, from 1768 to 1774. The French edition was translated from the German by Gauthier de La Peyronie. The work is accompanied by a folio atlas including a large map of the Russian Empire and 124 engraved maps and figures (on 107 leaves) of zoology, botany, ethnology, etc. Text: bindings rubbed, one headband damaged in volume I, one box of volume III rebound, scattered foxing and spotting.
