Lot no. 11
PALMYRE. Male head sculpted in high relief, wearing the cylindrical modius of the priests, encircled by a laurel wreath with a rosette in the centre. The detailed rendering of the eyes, mouth, wrinkles and hair on the eyebrows is very expressive. Two crystalline veins run through the limestone on the left side (between the top of the modius and the nose and between the ear and the upper lip). The tip of the nose is missing. Very well preserved overall. H. 27 cm (40.5 cm for the marble stand). 2nd-early 3rd century AD
For comparison: J. Dentzer-Feydy & J. Teixidor, Les Antiquités de Palmyre au musée du Louvre, Paris, 1993, p. 185, n°186 (AO2201) for the treatment of the details.
Provenance: Former collection of Minister Joseph Caillaux, acquired before 1943.
