Lot no. 196
PANEL WITH RADIATING CALLIGRAPHIC COMPOSITION Egypt or Saudi Arabia, 20th century Square panel in black silk velvet, embroidered with silver and silver-gilt thread, with a radiating calligraphic composition organised around a central calligraphic medallion formed by the combination of the words Allah, in a frame under glass. Size: 82 x 68 cm (panel) Inscription: Sura 112 al-Ikhlas. Provenance: London private collection, then by descent until 2024 This embroidered panel is part of the tradition of Islamic devotional textiles inspired by the kiswa of the Kaʿba, produced particularly in Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula in the XXᵉ century. Sura 112 al-Ikhlas, often chosen to adorn this type of embroidery, concisely sets out the doctrine of divine oneness, and its presence on the textile underlines the devotional function of the object. A similar example was sold at Artcurial on 21 May 2025, lot 110. A Gilt and Silver Metal-Thread Embroidery on Black Silk with Sura al-Ikhlas, Egypt or Saudi Arabia, 20th Century
