Lot no. 221
PAOLO SALA
Milan, 1859 - 1924
Canal in Venice
Signed P Sala bottom left
Watercolour on paper, 52X34.5 cm
Provenance:
Milan, private collection
The artist Paolo Sala succeeds with his limpid and elegant brushstrokes in transfusing the charm of truth into lyrical exaltation of colour and the triumph of forms ennobled without emphasis. He was devoted to the Lombard tradition and never imitated anyone but drew inspirations that he then succeeded in transforming into a unique and personal technique; he worked in Paris and Russia but the greatest success of his career as a painter came in England in the classical homeland of watercolour. His views of Milan and the Lagoon are highly appreciated, as can be seen in the luminous watercolour in the catalogue.
