A pupil of Cabanel and Gérôme, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret left academia in 1878 and won medals at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. A member of the Institut, he enjoyed international renown thanks to his dealer Goupil, who had links with the Knoeller family in New York. His paintings fetched astronomical prices.
His drawings, full of wit and finesse, were the precursors of a certain symbolism that would stir up the arts in the 1890s.
