Lot no. 315
Pascal Paoli (April 1725 - February 1807), general of the Corsican nation. Letter signed, (twice, the first time accompanied by the signature of secretary Rocca), Santa Reparata, 26 November 1755, to Messrs Anfriani Colonna, Negretti and Croce, State Inquisitors, red wax seal. 1p.1/2 in-folio in Italian. Central staining not detrimental to the reading of the letter.
These gentlemen are charged with examining the conduct and actions of every inhabitant of the province and with keeping an eye on those suspected of having a correspondence or engaging in trafficking with the officers of the Republic in the presidia, taking charge of trials and, if necessary, calling upon the arm of justice of the province and the warlords.
This is followed by a memorandum, signed, inviting the inquisitors to obtain accurate information on all the property of Genoese or foreigners, whether ecclesiastical or secular, such as tithes, profits or other income, belonging to Genoese or foreigners, or to people living in the prefectures, and to report to us on this subject within 15 days.
Antoine-Marie Graziani gives the following clarification: The institution of an Inquisizione di Stato the day after the meeting in November 1755 clearly shows the difficulties faced by Pascal Paoli. The men chosen were Croce, Negretti and Colonna Anfriani.
This exceptional justice speeded up all the procedures: up to the death penalty, the inquisitori could judge without referring to the government, except by providing it with a copy of the trial. Pascal Paoli, correspondence, vol. 1, p. 156
