Lot no. 153
PASSERAT Jean. Recueil des œuvres poétiques, augmenté de plus de la moitié, outre les précédentes éditions. Paris, Abel L'Angelier, 1606; large vol. in-8 bound in contemporary ivory vellum, smooth spine with title in black ink. Definitive, partly original and posthumous edition of these works prepared and published by Jean de Rougevalet, the author's nephew. This book is particularly rare.
Dedicated to Maximilian de Béthune, Duke of Sully, peer of France.
Interesting engraved portrait signed Tho(mas) de Leu, which is often missing. It shows the poet already aged, not very flattered by the burin: nose too present, drooping eyes, pinched mouth.
The volume has passed through important libraries: old heraldic ex-libris (azure, a dolphin with 3 rooster feet in chief); Henri Gallice (ex-libris, absent from the April and June 1980 catalogues); Marcel Jeanson (ex-libris). - PHP stamp.
