Lot no. 23
PASTEUR (Louis). Born in Dole. 1822-1895. Chemist and biologist. L.A.S. "L. Pasteur" to "Mon cher Henner" [the painter Jean-Jacques Henner]. S.l., 26 February 1878. 1 page in-16 (small split at the fold). ...I have the flu of all people. Tomorrow will not be enough to give me a presentable face on Thursday and, on Friday, I am going to the Health Council... He proposes a meeting ... We'll talk about our pretty Sedille nymphs. What an idea to place this masterpiece in a dining room! Pasteur is referring to the large painting by Jean-Jacques Henner entitled "Les Naïades", which adorned the walls of the dining room of Mr and Mrs Soyer's private mansion at 43 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré in Paris. The painter knew their son-in-law, Paul Sédille, the architect of the Magasins du Printemps. The painting is now in the Musée Henner.
