Lot no. 24
PASTEUR (Louis). Born in Dole. 1822-1895. A chemist and physicist by training, he developed the vaccine against rabies. C.A.S. "L. Pasteur" to "Cher Monsieur Nocard". Paris, [3 December] n.d.1 page in-16. At the head of the Pasteur Institute. Pasteur raises a problem with his colleague Edmond Nocard: ...The enclosed letter poses the following question: A dog is bitten by a rabid dog or a dog highly suspected of rabies; is its owner, who is obliged to shoot it, entitled to damages from the owner of the biting dog...Edmond Nocard, 1850-1903, veterinary surgeon and head of department at the École d'Alfort, owes his integration into Louis Pasteur's laboratory to his meeting with Émile Roux. He is regarded as the founder of veterinary microbiology. During his lifetime, his many works earned him international recognition. A genus of bacteria was named Nocardia in his honour. He also contributed to a major medical breakthrough that took place after his death, when he provided his pupil Camille Guérin with the strain of bovine tubercle bacillus from which B.C.G. was derived.
