Lot no. 5
Paul BONET (1899-1972). 6 L.A.S., Saint-Lambert and Paris 1946-1969, to Julien Gracq 9 pages in-8 on his letterhead, envelopes. Beautiful correspondence from the bookbinder to the author.
14 July 1946, he thanks Louis Poirier for sending his "precious copies" with an added manuscript; he is going to read it slowly; he will show him the model of his binding for the Château d'Argol... 27 February 1947: "I have been delighted to learn about your works: this profound harmony, these fictional beings you have created, who move in places beyond reality, are by their strangeness an affirmation of the human in the inhuman; their behaviour leads us into the secret world of our aspirations, into that strange inner life that we dare not confess". He has not yet been able to work on the model of his binding for Au château d'Argol, because of a series of Éluard and Chants de Maldoror illustrated by Dali... 4 May 1948. He has not yet read his André Breton. "I am curious to know the reactions of a young writer of the next generation - the generation after his - to the work of this great animator. I will not be in a place of indifference, but I am certain of discovering things that I have not been able to see, or not been able to see in this way, because my vision is more superficial: I am more subject to the law of concordances than to that of knowledge"... [24 June 1949], on Le Roi Pêcheur: "your drama has given me, in this evening, a moment of what is most lacking in our time - 'elevation'"... 26 November 1951, thanking you for sending the "large paper": "Under its yellow cover [...] Le Rivage des Syrtes does not 'intimidate' me, but reserves for me the emotion of an as yet unrevealed mystery"... 14 November 1969. "The man you knew, who was then about fifty-five, and the octogenarian who is writing are the same. In this space of time, which seems to me dizzyingly short, have we met ten times at long intervals? Perhaps that's all, too little for me. The lack of continuity in our conversations made it difficult to return to them, but little by little a few reminiscences, a few exchanges of ideas, resumed the course of earlier exchanges"...
