Lot no. 3218
PAUL DÉSIRÉ TROUILLEBERT (1829 Paris 1900) La forteresse royale et le pont de Chinon (Vienne). Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: Trouillebert. 32 × 46.3 cm. Expertise: Thomas Maier and Prof. Dr Bernd Müllerschön, 20.11.2023. Provenance: European collection. Paul Désiré Trouillebert is one of the best-known representatives of the Barbizon School. His atmospheric landscapes are mostly populated by individual figures or show us buildings in a rural setting. The painting offered for auction here depicts Chinon Castle above the Vienne, a tributary of the Loire. Chinon Castle is a place steeped in history: the French royal court resided in Chinon in the mid-15th century and Joan of Arc is said to have stayed at the castle in 1429. In Trouillebert's painting, Chinon Castle blends picturesquely into the depicted river landscape. Thomas Maier and Prof. Dr. Bernd Müllerschön will include the painting in the supplementary volume to the "Catalogue Raisonné de l'Œuvre Peint de Paul Désiré Trouillebert", which is currently in preparation. These objects marked with * (asterisk) are fully subject to VAT, i.e. VAT will be charged on the hammer price plus buyer's premium. Buyers who present a legally stamped export declaration will be reimbursed the VAT.
