His father, Paul Baron von Schlippenbach, was a Russian state councilor. Son Paul was initially educated in Germany and studied law at the University of Erlangen, graduating in 1896 with the Staatsexamen n and the degree of Dr. jur. From 1895, Schlippenbach studied painting with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian in Paris and then worked under James McNeill Whistler. After that, he went on to live in Dresden until around 1913 as a member of the Dresden Art Cooperative. In 1906, he invited Johann Walter-Kurau to Dresden. He later worked as a painter and etcher in Berlin.
