Lot no. 19
Paul GAUGUIN (1848-1903). L.A.S., [Pont-Aven, June 1890], to Émile Schuffenecker 3 pages in-8. Beautiful letter from Pont-Aven. Gauguin thanks for a consignment of colours and 50 francs, which were well received. He knows that Théo Van Gogh has written to Schuffenecker: "this comes from the gossip of [Émile] Bernard - Tanguy [le "Père Tanguy", colour merchant] had told him that we were leaving immediately for Madagascar" [a project that never came to fruition]... Théo Van Gogh has written to Gauguin "that he believes he will soon have enough power in the house to help me more effectively and more regularly; at the same time he will increase the value of my paintings. Especially if I went to Madagascar, the operation would become easy in the sense that my needs would be almost nil"... He hoped for the success of the deal with Charlopin [Dr Charlopin, collector], but he was worried: "These 12 million seem to smell bad, it's too much. I would have more confidence in 500,000 francs. Ask Roy what he thinks"... The holidays are coming up: "You'll soon be immersed in outdoor work. And how is the garden - the sweet peas, volubilis and nasturtiums must be wonderful". He asked Émile Bernard to find him "a treatise on the Malagasy language"...
