Imaginative, meticulously and finely painted work by the famous Russian artist. Mak worked as an illustrator for Moscow and St. Petersburg magazines, including Satirikon, as early as 1911-1914 and also created designs for a Moscow theatre. In 1921/22, after the Russian Revolution, Mak emigrated to Persia via Afghanistan and became the official court painter in Tehran in 1927. In 1928 he went to Egypt, in 1931 to Athens, in 1932 to Paris and finally in 1938 to Brussels. He became internationally recognised for his depictions of oriental and fairy-tale motifs inspired by ancient Persian illuminations as well as Edward Burne-Jones and Aubrey Beardsley.
