We would like to thank Marleen and Paul Van Hoeydonck for the information they kindly provided.
Paul Van Hoeydonck, a Belgian artist fascinated by space exploration, made history with Fallen Astronaut, the very first work of art to be installed on the Moon (by the crew of Apollo 15 in 1971) as a tribute to the astronauts who have passed away. Van Hoeydonck's Space Art, inspired by themes such as planets, satellites, astronauts, robots and futuristic cities, reflects his obsession with the infinite and the unknown, symbolised in his creations. This unique collaboration with NASA illustrated Van Hoeydonck's ambition to blend art and space to celebrate the dreams and sacrifices of humanity. Awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Liège, he has exhibited in major galleries and prestigious venues such as the Venice Biennale, the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art and MoMA.
