Limoges, early 16th century. Circle of Nardon Pénicaud (ca. 1470–1542/43).
Polychrome, parcel-gilt enamel on copper. In a Renaissance walnut frame with remnants of gilding. Verso with barely legible numbering in ink.
With frame 16 × 13 cm.
Minor losses, hairline cracks, and cracks to the enamel. Wooden frame with losses, wormholes and supplements. Frame with missing suspension hook.
Provenance:
- English private collection (according to Christie's).
- Christie's auction, London, 8 November 2007, Lot No. 101 (described as “Circle of the Master of the Large Foreheads”).
- The Collection of Arlette and Antony Embden, France.
Cf. Sotheby's London auction for a stylistically similar Nativity scene attributed to the “Master of the Large Foreheads” (Sotheby's London, 6 July 1989, Lot No. 213). The conventional name goes back to Marquet de Vasselot (“Les Emaux Limousins,” Paris 1921), who places the Master in the context of Nardon Pénicaud.
