Burnished blank (PROOF) with mirror fields contrasting with satin-finish relief. Only minimal hairlines in the fields and minimal flats on the high reliefs. Very rare if not unique for this vintage. Superb at Fleur de coin.
Several strikes of 2 1/2 gulden of William III on burnished blanks (PROOF) exist. All these mintages are only reported in few copies in general. The following PROOF vintages are known: 1849, 1850, 1860, 1862, 1867, 1869, 1873 (PCGS in mat proof), 1874 (PCGS in silver gilt) and now our copy for 1872.
