(Cox) - "Report by the later British Admiral Anson of his circumnavigation of the world in 1740-44 during the war against Spain. Anson's six-ship expedition was organised by London merchants who, despite the loss of five ships, still managed to make a large profit, as Anson brought back the last ship, the "Centurion", loaded with gold after capturing a Spanish galleon. The voyage description was published by the ship's chaplain Richard Walter from Anson's travel journals. It is one of the most widely read and most translated seafaring accounts of the 18th century" (Eutin). The majority of the work concerns South America, islands in the Pacific and the Philippines. In addition to maps and plans, the plates mostly show coastal views and profiles. - Provenance: Edward Henry Rich, 8th Earl of Warwick etc., or Earls of Warwick, with their coat of arms supralibro stamped in gold on the front and back covers of the binding. The Earl of Warwick is also listed as one of around 200 subscribers for a copy on "Royal Paper" on p. 6r of the pre-bound list of subscribers, which contains around 1500 names. - Binding minimally rubbed, endpapers and a few pages and plates slightly foxed in places in the wide margins, the plates occasionally with offsetting, otherwise a well-preserved, unique copy with first-class provenance of this important work.
