PEDESTAL WITH A MEDALLION “THE VIRTUOUS ATHENIAN WOMAN” Louis XVI style, France, late 19th century. Rosewood inlaid in lozenge patterns with dark-tinted fillets. Rectangular, marble top with a shaped edge, on a rectangular, profiled shaft that tapers towards the bottom. Richly gilt bronze fittings in the form of leaf friezes, fleurons and an oval relief medallion depicting the “Virtuous Athenian Woman” crowned by a bow and a flower garland. 43 × 33 × 112 cm. The bronze partly oxidized. Few veneer defects and supplements. The design of the bronze plaque probably goes back to a painting by Joseph-Marie Vien (1716-1809) entitled “La Vertueuse Athénienne”. It represents winter, personified by a priestess burning incense on an antique bowl. The plaque on offer is a mirror image and is probably derived from an engraving template. The same motif can be seen on a medallion of a Napoleon III secretaire, offered at an auction in Germany in 2001. Jh. Palisander eingelegt in Rautenmotiven mit dunkel getönten Filets. Rechteckiges, randmoulüriertes Marmorblatt auf rechteckigem, profiliertem und sich nach unten verjüngendem Vierkantschaft auf Quaderbasis. Reiche, vergoldete Bronzebeschläge in Form von Blattfriesen, Fleurons sowie ovalem Reliefmedaillon mit der Darstellung der "Tugendhaften Athenerin" bekrönt von Masche und Blumengirlande. 43 × 33 × 112 cm. Bronze teils oxidiert. Wenige Furnierfehlstellen und Ergänzungen. Der Entwurf der Bronzeplakette geht wohl auf ein Gemälde von Joseph-Marie Vien (1716–1809) mit dem Titel "La Vertueuse Athénienne" zurück. Es stellt den Winter dar, personifiziert durch eine Priesterin, welche auf einer antiken Dreifuss-Schale Weihrauch verbrennt. Unsere Plakette ist spiegelverkehrt abgebildet und wohl von einer Stichvorlage abgeleitet. Das gleiche Motiv ist auf einem Medaillon eines Napoleon III-Sekretärs, angeboten 2001 auf einer Auktion in Deutschland, zu sehen. Jener Sekretär wurde Béfort Jeune zugeschrieben. Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet.
