Lot no. 104
Very fine 19th-century Antique Revival earrings in approx. 20k (847 thousandths) yellow gold featuring large, wide curved stems that can be inserted into the earlobes (with large holes) and decorative elements such as pendant stamped faces, tassels and rosettes on Antique Revival chains. Gold analysis: 84.76%; Ag 13.43%; Cu 0.74%; this analysis was carried out at the request of the Aurum Antiquum appraisal firm under the direction of Drs. Besson and Thiaudière. A full expert report was produced by this firm. The female face is similar to that of Astarte from the Punic-Phoenician culture, with the rosettes found in both Greece and Mesopotamia on men's bracelets. The chains also suggest Greek inspiration. The finish is not Antique, but it demonstrates the extraordinary research that went into jewellery techniques in the 19th century, a period when site after site was being discovered and Europeans were becoming increasingly interested in Antiquity. There are a few traces of modern repairs, some wear and tear and some small missing pieces, particularly in the granulation. Diameter of the discs: between 3.8 and 3.9 cm. Height of the central face: approx. 2 cm. Total height: between 8 and 8.5 cm. Gross weight: 21.9 and 21.6 g. totalling 43.5 g.
