The cameo depicts the helmeted goddess Athena standing before a burning brazier. The goddess is draped and holds a shield with a Gorgon mascaron. With her left hand, she points to the sky, symbolising the votive and divinatory aspect of the scene. The work is sculpted with great mastery using the various colours of the agate, such as the flames worked in the red of the agate.
