Lot no. 191
ROMAN PENDANT Comprising a gold cornice embellished with braided gold threads, and set with a large intaglio on carnelian depicting a comic theatrical mask. The face is characterised by very pronounced features, with deep forehead wrinkles, pronounced superciliary arches, round exaggerated eyes and a nose enhanced by the use of globular elements. The virtually bald skull has wisps of scraggly hair on the sides, and the beard under the chin with its scruffy locks accentuates the old-fashioned, comic aspect of the theatrical character. Finally, his wide-open mouth is a direct reference to classical representations of ancient theatrical masks. The engraving, with its different techniques and volumes, attests to the virtuosity of the incisor. Signs of wear. Honey colour of the stone and large size. For a similar intaglio see AA.VV. The Beverly Collection of Gems at Alnwick Castle, p. 291, n.273. The mask is slightly three-quarter depicted. Gold and carnelian. 18 x 25 x 4 mm; 3.7 g Roman art, 1st century B.C. 1st century A.D.
