PORTEFAIX BLANC" HANGER BY JEAN-ANDRÉ REICHE, THE DIAL SIGNED 'Fr Ee CAGE À PARIS', circa 1815 in gilt and patinated bronze, he is depicted carrying a cotton bale on his back with a cane and a letter in his hands. The dial was made by the enameller and painter François-Marie Dubuisson, the movement round, striking the hours and a half, the escapement with anchor, the simple balance, the suspension with silk thread, the counting wheel outside, the striking on a gong. (Wear to the gilding, minor accidents and wear). A CLOCK 'AU PORTEFAIX BLANC', BY JEAN-ANDRÉ REICHE, THE DIAL SIGNED 'Fr Ee CAGE A PARIS', CIRCA 1815 34 x 21 x 11 CM - 13,4 x 8,3 x 4,3 IN. Model registered by the bronzemaker Jean André Reich in 1808 François Étienne Cage was a watchmaker on the Quai de la Grève in 1812, but between 1820 and 1840 he worked, perhaps on his own account, in the Rue St Antoine. Although the 'black portefaix' model is relatively common, the 'white portefaix' version shown here is much rarer. An identical example, but with a patina on the hat and no patina on the base, can be found in the Duesberg collection in Mons.
