Lot no. 43
Skeleton clock with twin arches supporting two superimposed dials in chased and gilt bronze, blue enamel spangled with gold and white marble with five feet. The lower dial shows the duodecimal hours and minutes as well as the days and date of the decade. The upper dial shows the date of the moon. Signed Bruel A Paris in gilt under the main dial, circa 1795 46.5 x 27 x 13.5 cm With a mahogany veneered counter base and bell. A hair on the enamel of the upper dial. Note: Our skeleton clock bearing the revolutionary calendar can be dated fairly accurately between 22 September 1794, when the new calendar was implemented, and 9 September 1805, when Napoleon I reinstated the Gregorian calendar. The richness and quality of the enamelled decoration on our clock should be compared with the work of Joseph Coteau, Dubuisson and Adrien Merlet. Bruel, a clockmaker in Paris, was active at the end of the 18th century and is known to have produced several skeleton clocks with numerous complications similar to ours, in particular a clock in the Musée Carnavalet, inv MB627.
