XXXVII - Prou, n° 809 var. - MG, no. 618 - MEC, no. 816 - Corpus des M. du Languedoc, no. 380 In 817, Louis the Pious divided the Empire between his three sons and gave Pepin I the kingdom of Aquitaine. Pepin I died on 13 December 838, having two sons, Pepin and Charles. Louis the Pious then gave this inheritance to Charles the Bald. However, Pepin II held on, alternately losing and regaining the territories of his kingdom. In 845, Charles the Bald relinquished Aquitaine to him and reserved Poitiers, Saintes and Angoulême for himself. In 855, Charles the Bald had his eldest son Charles the Child crowned King of Aquitaine in Limoges. Pepin II was not handed over to Charles the Bald until 865.
