Pere Mates (1490 - Girona, 1558) "Saint Peter, Saint Barbara, a bishop and Our Lady of Sorrows" Tempera and gold painted panel. Fragment of a predella. Circa 1550. 143 x 41 cm. One of the most outstanding representatives of renaissance art from Girona. As explained in the article by Jaume Marqués, there is a great similarity in the iconography of this altarpiece and others which are also attributed to Pere Mates. For example, the figure of Saint Peter in this predella, is a portrait of the same person, with the same attitude as that in the altarpiece of Montagut, which Mates signed with an anagram. Also, the bishop who appears in the third rosette is exactly the same as the one painted in 1526 in the Saint Magdalene altarpiece. The figure of Saint Barbara is the same as the Saint Victoria in the Millás altarpiece, and as Saint Barbara in the Banyoles altarpiece; the Bishop Saint is even more similar, being almost identical both in gesture and in vestments, including in the detail on the book which he holds in his hand, as figures of Bishop Saints in other altarpieces by Pere Mates.
