Who is not familiar with Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl? We see a young woman posing for the painter, illuminated by a natural pear-shaped pearl that catches the light. Large pear-shaped pearls (over a centimetre in size) are rare, especially in the case of fine seawater pearls, which have grown without any human intervention. While the round pearl, perfectly round and smooth to the eye, is the reference pearl that costs the most, the pear-shaped pearl can reach or even exceed the price of the round pearl because it is very complicated to match. It can take years to find two drop-shaped pearls of the same colour, very similar shape and equivalent size. When the pearls are fine, they are called a Union of Excellence!
