Lot no. 132
PERRAULT (Charles). Histoires ou contes du tems passé, avec des moralitez. Amsterdam, Jacques Desbordes, 1708. Small in-12, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges, edged slipcase (M. Godillot). A very rare edition of Perrault's Tales.
This is an exact reprint of the Dutch counterfeit that appeared in the same year as the Paris original (1697), which is, so to speak, the white bird of French literary collections.
This Dutch edition brings together the eight prose stories in the original, each illustrated with a vignette: Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, The Fairies, Cinderella, Riquet and Thumbelina.
Curiously, the title gives the author as Fils de Monsieur Perreault de l'Academie François [sic], as in the 1697 forgery. The dedication to Mademoiselle is signed P. Darmancour. In fact, the participation in the writing of the Contes of Perrault's youngest son, Pierre Perrault Darmancour (1678-1700), is now attested.
This edition is extremely rare; it is missing from the BnF and all French public libraries.
Tchemerzine mentions it without having seen it, according to Brunet's supplement, who himself only mentions it according to Baron Pichon's catalogue (1869, I, no. 766: "Édition rare", Trautz-Bauzonnet red morocco copy, acquired for 145 fr. by Techener). It was not in the collection of the Comte de Lignerolles, who owned eleven editions of the Contes published between 1697 and 1781 (1894, II, nos. 1911-1921).
A very fine copy in lemon morocco, washed, glued and carefully bound by Marcel Godillot, who practised under his name from 1938 to 1975. It is a little short of margins.
From the library of André Gutzwiller (1922-2014), Basel banker and bibliophile, with bookplate.
