STANDING FIGURE, MEZCALA CULTURE, GUERRERO, MEXICO, 350 BC - 100 A.D. J.-C.
Speckled green diorite. The body fits into the original shape of a ceremonial axe. The legs are free but short, giving prominence to the torso on which the arms, represented by grooves, rest. The head and facial features are stylised to the extreme.

This Mezcala figure falls between types M10 and M12 according to the classification established by Carlo Gay. This ritual object was placed in votive caches to honour the gods and bring prosperity and fertility.
